Four properties of Luganda that decide how the translation comes out
- Noun classes govern the whole sentence. Every noun belongs to a class, and that class stamps a prefix onto the adjectives, verbs, numbers, possessives and pronouns that refer to it. Change the noun and every agreeing word in the clause has to change with it. This is the single largest source of broken machine output in Bantu languages: the vocabulary is right, the concord is wrong, and the result reads to a speaker the way a page of mismatched verb endings would read in English.
- One verb can be a whole English clause. Subject, tense, the object being acted on, negation and a string of derivational extensions all attach to a single verb stem. A phrase that English writes as six separate words appears as one long unbreakable token. Total word counts therefore fall against the English while individual words grow, which is precisely the combination that overflows a narrow column or a form field.
- Length is spelled, tone is not. Long vowels and long consonants are written by doubling the letter, and the doubling is meaningful rather than decorative, so dropping one letter changes the word. Tone, by contrast, is contrastive in speech but is not marked in ordinary writing at all, which means some written words are ambiguous on the page and are resolved only by context.
- There is a letter outside the usual range. The alphabet includes a velar nasal written as an n with a hook, a character that sits outside the Latin range most European fonts ship with. Because typing it is awkward, a very common workaround writes it as an n followed by an apostrophe instead. Both forms circulate in real documents, and a search or a glossary built on one will not find the other.
The most spoken language in a country where it is not official
Uganda's official language is English, and Swahili has been given official status alongside it, largely for regional and East African Community reasons. Neither is what most people in the centre of the country actually speak. Luganda is the language of the Buganda region and of Kampala, and beyond its several million first language speakers it works as the everyday second language of the capital and the towns along the main roads out of it. Anyone producing public information for central Uganda is producing it in Luganda whatever the constitution says.
That gives it an unusual profile for a translation service. Personal documents such as birth certificates, national identity cards and academic transcripts are issued in English by Ugandan authorities, so they almost never need translating out of Luganda. The demand runs the other way: English source material that has to reach ordinary readers. Health campaigns, agricultural guidance, legal rights information, election material and survey instruments are drafted in English by ministries, universities and international organisations, and then have to work in a Luganda that a market trader in Kampala or a farmer in Masaka will read without effort.
Luganda has a long written history to draw on. Missionary printing established a standard orthography in the nineteenth century, a complete Bible translation followed early, and the Buganda kingdom maintained written administrative records of its own. That means there is a real literary register available, distinct from the heavily English-mixed speech of the city. Choosing between them is an editorial decision: a government notice usually wants the formal register, while a health leaflet aimed at teenagers usually does not.

Steps to a Luganda version of your file
Create an account
Sign up with an email address and open the dashboard.
Upload the document
Drag it in or browse for it. Paid plans take files up to 1 GB, which covers a full training manual or a set of scanned field reports.
Choose Luganda
Pick the language your document is written in, then select Luganda as the target. Swahili is a different language with official status in Uganda, so do not treat the two as interchangeable.
Have a speaker read the concord
Download the result and ask a Luganda reader to check the agreement prefixes in a few paragraphs. That is where automated output goes wrong first, and it is obvious to a native reader.
Material that gets translated for Luganda readers
- Public health information: treatment adherence, maternal and child health, immunisation, nutrition and outbreak guidance, an area where Uganda produces a great deal of translated material
- Research consent forms and questionnaires for clinical and social studies run through Ugandan institutions, which have to be comprehensible to participants and back-translatable for ethics review
- Agricultural extension guides, cooperative rules and market information for coffee, banana and smallholder farming in the central region
- Land documents and dispute material connected with the distinctive tenure system of the Buganda region, whose terminology has no clean English equivalent
- Voter education, civic rights and legal aid material produced by commissions and NGOs
- Radio and television scripts, public service announcements and campaign material
- Church material: liturgy, hymns, sermons and scripture, drawing on one of the older written traditions in the region
- Early primary school books and teacher guides, where Luganda is a language of instruction in the region
Because Ugandan certificates and transcripts are already issued in English, the certified translation question rarely arises for this pair. Where it does, for a statement taken in Luganda or a document for a foreign court, a human translator has to sign a declaration of accuracy. Our guide to official translations explains the process.
Three things to look at in the finished PDF
The hooked n
Check whether it appears as a proper letter, as an n with an apostrophe, or as an empty box. All three happen. Pick one convention for the whole document, because a mixture makes the file unsearchable and looks careless to a reader.
Doubled letters
Long vowels and long consonants are written by repeating the letter and the repetition carries meaning. Spell checkers built for English treat doubled letters as typos, so make sure no well-meaning cleanup pass has collapsed them.
English borrowings
Technical and medical vocabulary is often borrowed with a Luganda class prefix attached rather than translated. That is normal and usually clearer for readers than a coined equivalent, but it should be consistent across the document.
Luganda translation questions
Is Luganda the same as Ganda, or as Uganda?
Luganda is the name of the language, Buganda is the region and kingdom, and a person from it is a Muganda, with Baganda as the plural. Linguists sometimes list the language as Ganda. Uganda, the country, takes its name from the same root by way of Swahili but covers a much larger area with many unrelated languages, so a Ugandan document is not necessarily a Luganda one.
Why does the output read as wrong to a Luganda speaker even though the words are right?
Almost always because of noun class agreement. Every noun carries a class, and that class has to be echoed as a prefix on the adjectives, verbs, numbers and pronouns that refer to it. A system that gets the vocabulary right but the concord wrong produces text that a speaker experiences as ungrammatical from the first line. It is the thing to have a native reader check before anything else.
How should the velar nasal be written?
The standard alphabet uses an n with a descending hook, but because that character is awkward to type and missing from many older fonts, a widespread convention writes it as an n followed by an apostrophe. Both appear in genuine published Luganda. Choose one for your document and use it throughout, because searching or indexing a file that mixes the two will miss half the occurrences.
Do I need Luganda or Swahili for Uganda?
It depends on the region and the audience. Swahili has official status in Uganda and is widely used in the security services and in cross-border trade, but it is not the everyday language of the central region. For material aimed at Kampala and the Buganda area, Luganda is what people read. For the north and east, neither is the local language, so ask before assuming.
Will the Luganda text be longer or shorter than the English?
It will usually have fewer words but longer ones, because subject, tense, object and negation all attach to a single verb. That combination is harder on a layout than plain expansion: a long unbreakable token in a narrow column has nowhere to wrap. Rebuilding the PDF re-fits the text into the space available rather than letting it run outside the frame.
Can I translate a consent form or a questionnaire for a research study?
It is a common use, and the AI draft is a reasonable starting point. Ethics committees normally require a documented back-translation and a review by a native speaker, so treat the machine output as the first pass in that process rather than the finished instrument. Comprehension in the field, not literal fidelity, is what those documents are judged on.
What are the limits and the price?
Paid plans take up to 1 GB or 5,000 pages. The Monthly plan is $14.99 for 100 pages or 30,000 words and the Annual plan is $135 a year, roughly $11.25 a month. AI translation is charged at $0.005 per word. There is a $2 7-day trial covering 10 pages or 3,000 words for testing a sample.
